What are Concrete Spacer blocks or concrete spacer blocks?
Concrete spacer blocks are the small concrete parts that are used to ensure the position of reinforcement (i.e. steel) in the right place with a specified concrete cover. In RCC structures like slab, beam, column, footing, etc. concrete cover is provided to maintain the durability of the structure. Concrete Cover is the minimum distance between the surface of embedded reinforcement (i.e. steel) and the outer surface of the concrete. Concrete cover varies from 15mm to 50mm for different structural members.
What is the necessity of Concrete Spacers or blocks in construction practice?
- Due to many reasons like poor construction practices, cracking on the outer surface of member, bad quality of material, lack of cover, steel from structure gets exposed to the environment and gets corroded. When concrete spacers are provided corrosion is minimized.
- Concrete spacers act as thermal insulators and fire protectors in the structure by maintaining a minimum distance between steel bars and the outer surface of the concrete.
- Concrete spacers act as a chair for reinforcement. So they provide proper bonding between steel and surrounding concrete.
- Concrete spacers help the reinforcement to be in the position without slipping away. This facilitates the construction with the required strength.
Classification of concrete Spacers or block
Single Spacer or Cover Block
- Single spacer or cover block is the most basic form of the spacers in use.
- It offers solid support when reinforcement is horizontally placed.
- It is mostly suitable when cover and reinforcement of same size is used for construction.
- It is widely used for structural members like slabs and beams.
- It has different sizes which are based on size of steel and cover required.

- SC20 used for 20 mm cover for slab
- SA20 used for 20 mm cover for slab
- SA25 used for 25 mm cover for slab and beams
- SC50 used for 50 mm cover for footings
Multiple Spacer or Cover Block
- These types of spacers contain many sizes of covers in single block.
- It is suitable when different cover sizes are required for construction.
- This can be used for structural members like slab, beam.
- It has different sizes which are based on size of cover required.

- SA20/25 used for 20/25 mm cover for slab and beam
- SA30/40 used for 30/40 mm cover for column and beam.
- SA35/50 used for 35/50 mm cover for column and beam and footing.
- SA35/40/45/50 used for 35/40/45/50 mm cover for column and beam and footing.
Heavy Duty Spacer or Cover Block

- These types of spacer blocks are used when structural member is casted for heavy loads.
- These are suitable for heavy rafts and footings.

Circular Spacer or Cover Block
- It is mostly suitable for vertical members like columns, piles and pile caps.
- It provides easy practice to maintain required spacing between vertical steel and formwork.
- Its helps to maintain the vertical alignment of steel while pouring the concrete from height.
